Hope College Scholarships for Science, Engineering, and Mathematics

Hope College is offering eight scholarships for students transferring from a community college who are planning to complete a major in science, engineering, or mathematics.

Qualifications: These scholarships are open to students who have completed two years of study at a community college, who are United States citizens or permanent residents.

Criteria: The following are the selection criteria that will be used for these scholarship:
  1. Preparation to enter study in one of the science disciplines at Hope College.
  2. Intention to complete a degree in one of the science disciplines (Biology, Chemistry Computer Science, Engineering, Geological and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Physics). This includes programs with these majors that prepare for secondary education and pre-health professions.
  3. Demonstrated financial need.
Benefits: Recipients of the S-STEM Scholarship will be awarded the following:
  1. A scholarship in the amount of their demonstrated financial need up to a maximum of  $10,000 per year for two years.
  2. A paid summer research position at Hope College during the summer of 2008.
  3. A number of special activities and benefits to assist in making a successful transition to Hope, including a special orientation session, additional faculty advising and counseling, and access to peer mentors.
What do I do to apply: The application process has the following timetable:

  • Contact Prof. Herb Dershem about your interest. Send him an unofficial transcript of your college work so that it can be evaluated.
  • Arrange a visit to the Hope campus.
  • Apply to Hope College.
Jan 2008
 Fill out and submit the FAFSA form and Hope Supplemental Application for Financial Aid form..
Feb 29, 2008
 Deadline for the submission of scholarship application (form will be available soon).
Mar 2008
 All applicants will have an on-campus interview sometime during this month.
Apr 1 2008
 Notification of awardees and alternates.
May 1 2008
 Deadline of acceptance of scholarships. Notification of alternates.
End of May, beginning of June
 Beginning of Hope College Summer Undergraduate Research programs. Scholarship recipients will be invited to participate
August 26 2008
 First day of classes
