Metabolic Reconstruction of Prokaryotic Life

My research interests lie in automating the process of creating metabolic reconstructions for prokaryotes based on their genome sequences. I am collaborating with Dr. Aaron Best, a microbiologist at Hope College, and Dr. Nathan Tintle, a statistician also at Hope College. We have built a set of tools for automated metabolic reconstruction within The SEED, a comparative genome annotation and analysis tool.

We have recently published our approach to metabolic reconstruction in BMC Bioinformatics.

Several undergraduate students are involved on this research project. Below, Kevin Formsma (left) and Paul Boillot (right) presented a poster at the Council for Undergraduate Research Posters on the Hill event in the Rayburn Congressional Office Building, April 25, 2007. They are pictured with Congressman Vernon J. Ehlers of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
